Shop Independent

Holly Tucker MBE, founder of notonthehighstreet, and one of my personal heroes continues to champion shopping independent this month by launching “Shop Independent – Summer 2021”.  With the ethos that shopping small isn’t just for Christmas, or in a pandemic! Friday 25th June is Shop Independent Day where she’s encouraging everyone to spend £1 with small businesses.  If we all spent £1 per day on shopping local and shopping small, that adds up to £12 billion a year.  Jeff Bezos has enough cash.  Vote with your money.

Always eager to help, I thought I’d share some of my favourite independent gifting businesses for you to browse.

Annie With Alex - Practical & Multipurpose Bags for you and your home

Designed and made by a Mum and Daughter team in Hertfordshire, these practical bags are lovely.  I also enjoy tuning into Alex’s daily Instagram stories @anniewithalex.

Cotswold Baby Co - Lovely Things for Little People

I’ve been shopping here for years.  The cutest farm inspired clothing and accessories for babies and small children.  They’ve just launched a new bug collection which I love!

Raising The RUFF – Awesome gift boxes for your dog

Supporting the Wild At Heart Foundation, these dog subscription boxes are a great idea!  They are created around a different theme each month so there is always something new to explore.

The Amy Verse - Amy's universe of calligraphy, illustration and wedding stationery

With the complete obliteration of the wedding industry due to COVID last year, Amy had to reinvent her product range and she’s definitely come out on top.  She is always first to market with hand illustrated cards featuring popular culture moments that are laugh out loud funny.  Amy’s Instagram will definitely cheer you up @amyverse.

Opened in 1997, this is now the biggest independent gift shop in Manchester.  Celebrating handmade, fair trade and ethical goods.  I can lose an hour browsing the gorgeous things on their colourful website.

Hetty’s Kitchen – Fudging Delicious Mail Order Brownies

This is just up the road from me.  Check out the brownie scotch eggs.  Er, yum.

Bespoke and Oak – Personalised Gifts For Everyone

So many original gifting ideas.  Most made from wood and personalised.  If you’re looking for a unique adult gift, this is a great place to start.

Selen - Sustainability Without Compromise

This is my friend, Alex's homewares company.  Full of gorgeous things you'll end up buying for yourself rather than to gift!

Pretty Post – For Stationery Lovers

Zoe recently did a full knockout tournament on her Instagram stories for the most popular piece of stationery in the world.  I have never been more invested in anything in my life.  She is also an amazing calligrapher (hmmm – bit of a theme here).

Poppins On Mackinac – Send a Little Love from Mackinac

Not even going to pretend this is local (it’s in the US) but it has a piece of my heart.  I first worked for Kate in 2000 on the magical Mackinac Island in Michigan and have now spent 3 summers working for her on the island.  If you have family or friends in the US and want to send them a card, ditch Moonpig and use Kate’s services instead.  She’ll write and mail the card for you, saving time and international postal fees.  She has the BEST selection of cards and gorgeous gifts.
